Private Andrew McCrory

 

Andrew McAra McCrory (or McGrory) was born on 8 April 1898 at Lady Hill, Antrim, the third of five children of labourer (later railway porter and bread server) Robert McCrory and his wife Maud (or Margaret) McCrory (née McAra). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living in Riverside Street, Antrim, with his parents, siblings and another relative.

McCrory enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 7 and 23 August 1915 (No.1718 – later Corps of Hussars No.71519). He remained at the regimental reserve camp at Antrim until January 1918, when he embarked for Egypt with a draft of around fifty North Irish Horsemen from the Antrim camp. There he was attached to the 1/1st Staffordshire Yeomanry (Queen's Own Royal Regiment), serving with that regiment in the Palestine campaign.

McCrory was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve, on 1 August 1919.

By 1939 he had moved to Belfast, living at 49 Fitzroy Avenue and working as a manager. He died there on 5 January 1969 and was buried in the Roselawn Cemetery.
